Summer is a time to build. Maybe you’ve got some carpentry to do, like repairing your deck. Or you want to construct your first Adirondack chair. Sometimes the carpentry isn’t an end in itself; maybe you need to cut some lumber for concrete forms. You need a circular saw, but these tools are expensive. So the question is: How much saw do you need? To help you answer that, we tested four corded, budget-friendly circular saws, each surprisingly capable in its own way. We also rolled a cordless model into the mix, to see how it would compare. Corded circular saws are powerful tools that crosscut wood (cut across its grain) and rip it (cut with the grain). The entry-level tools that we examined do not exhibit much design variation. For example, the blades in each of these saws are 7¼ inches in diameter, positioned on the right side of the motor, and, when fully lowered, make cuts about 2¼ inches deep (or slightly deeper). However, when you increase price by $10 to $15 from the category’s basement, you go from a saw with a 12-amp motor to one that operates at 15 amps. This motor is better able to handle deep cuts, especially if the lumber is wet. If you need a saw to cut framing lumb...

XP Power has announced two new ranges of AC-DC power supplies that provide BF class insulation

XP Power has announced two new ranges of AC-DC power supplies that provide BF class insulation for healthcare applications where EMC performance is a key requirement. The PBR500 and PBR650 series offer power levels up to 500W and 650W respectively. Both accept a very wide, universal input range of 80VAC – 264VAC at 47Hz to 63Hz and offer a total of eight single output voltages (12V, 15V, 18V, 24V, 28V, 36V, 48V & 57V), giving system designers the flexibility to cover many applications with the same series. Both series offer efficiencies of 90%, reducing the heat generated during operation and prolonging the lifetime. The PBR500 is available in two formats. The U channel format provides 350 – 400W when convection cooled and 450 – 500W with external forced air cooling. The covered version, including a variable speed integral cooling fan for low audible noise, provides a complete 450 – 500W solution. The PBR650 provides 600 – 650W in an enclosed supply also with a variable speed integral fan with low audible noise. The products have very low earth and patient leakage currents and provide 2 x MOPP from input to output and 1 x MOPP from both input to ground and output to ground. ...

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> MEN Micro unveiled the “CC10S,” a Linux-ready i.MX6 based multi-display controller board for touchscreens deployed in harsh, -40 to 85° C environments. Imagine a humongous earth-moving rig prepping an oil shale site in North Dakota in the middle of January. You’re going to want a touchscreen with that, and it better be tough. The MEN Micro CC10S single board computer is designed for controlling 7- to 15-inch LCD touchscreens that must deal with the rough, tough stuff on a daily basis. The multi-display controller has the same 95 x 95mm footprint, Linux support, industrial temperature support, and Freescale i.MX6 system-on-chip as MEN Micro’s CC10C COM Express Type 6 Compact form factor COM — minus the Altera Cyclone IV FPGA. In fact, as the photos below suggest, the CC10B SBC and CC10C COM appear to share a common PCB. (Perhaps this explains the “S” and “C” in the boards’ model numbers, which invites a brief moment to consider the fine line between SBCs and COMs.) Any of these i.MX6 options enables the SBC’s dual-channel LVDS interface t...

Taste of the tropics: Tamarind, treacle and rum-glazed pork ribs

Let the sunshine in with more zingy Caribbean recipes from Ainsley Harriott’s new book and TV series. Tender baby back ribs that fall off the bone… there’s nothing better. These are great with Spiced Buttered Corn-on-the-cob, a summer favourite in my house Tender baby back ribs that fall off the bone… there’s nothing better. Basting keeps them moist and succulent and the tamarind delivers a gorgeous sweet-and-sour taste. These are great with Spiced Buttered Corn-on-the-cob, a summer favourite in my house. In a mixing bowl, whisk the black treacle, tamarind paste, rum, garlic, chillies, chilli powder, black mustard seeds, pepper and salt. Place the ribs in a deep roasting tray and pour the marinade over. Roll the ribs around in the marinade to ensure they are well covered, then cover with clingfilm and place in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. Remove the ribs from the fridge and allow to come up to room temperature. Remove the clingfilm, cover with foil and cook in the oven for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, make the Spiced Buttered Corn-on-the-cob. Mix the butter, paprika, allspice, chilli flakes, garlic, salt and peppe...

The Puj Big Hug Is the Hooded Towel Your Toddler Needs

Bathrooms, to a protective parent, are dangerous places. There are so many hard surfaces everywhere — wet, slippery, potentially head-cracking surfaces. And a toddler in water, even if she’s pretty good at sitting up, can seem so close to sliding just a little bit and tipping over. But the worst part is the end. The kid’s all clean, nobody drowned, but then they’re freezing — shivering, yelling, hopping (did we mention the wet, slippy porcelain?) — and parents need to get them warm quick. That’s why we love the Puj Big Hug Towel. Soft, fluffy, and very user-friendly, the hooded towel slash bathrobe not only dries them quickly, but it’s also a fun accessory that kids actually want to use. The Puj Big Hug is a 100 percent cotton towel made specifically for children ages 2–8. (Puj makes one for infants, too, but unfortunately not one for larger kids: the Big Hug’s only downside is that it can gape by the neck on the 5 and ups). The towel is, well, a towel, but it has a large hood as well as two pockets (one Fatherly staffer’s toddler refers to these as “hand dents”) where kids can put their hands. This allows them to wear the towel like a sweatshirt, dry their hands quickly, and ea...

The way we measure time and distance is changing — Quartz

We measure stuff all the time—how long, how heavy, how hot, and so on—because we need to for things such as trade, health, and knowledge. But making sure our measurements compare apples with apples has been a challenge: how to know if my kilogram weight or meter length is the same as yours. Attempts have been made to define the units of measurement over the years. But on International Metrology Day we saw the complete revision of those standards come into play. You won’t notice anything—you will not be heavier or lighter than yesterday—because the transition has been made to be seamless. Just the definitions of the seven base units of the SI (Système International d’Unités, or the International System of Units) are now completely different from yesterday. Humans have always been able to count, but as we evolved we quickly moved to measuring lengths, weights, and time. The Egyptian Pharaohs caused pyramids to be built based on the length of the royal forearm, known as the Royal Cubit. This was kept and promulgated by engineer priests who maintained the standard under pain of death. But the cubit wasn’t a fixed unit over time—it was about half a meter, plus or minus a few tens of...

Zak the Baker’s popular multigrain and country wheat loaves are crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Everything in the bakery is certified kosher.(Photo: Platonic Studios) Bread has suffered a bit over the past few decades, derided for being full of carbohydrates and no nutrition in an age of Atkins and low-carb diets. Recently though, Americans have come to realize that carbs are not all that terrible. And, bakers across the country are using whole, heirloom grains and long fermenting wild yeasts to create healthier, nutritious loaves. Some even have their own stone mills in order to provide the freshest grains possible. One of the south’s biggest proponents of heirloom grains, David Bauer makes some of the best bread you’ll ever taste at Farm & Sparrow Bakery in Candler, N.C. “Heirloom grains are important to me because they have a genetic wildness that gives them the potential for greater expression of place in their flavor and qualities,” says Bauer. “They are not inherently better, but they are more dynamic and have a great ...

Plasmodium gametocytes display homing and vascular transmigration in the host bone marrow

Transmission of Plasmodium parasites to the mosquito requires the formation and development of gametocytes. Studies in infected humans have shown that only the most mature forms of Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes are present in circulation, whereas immature forms accumulate in the hematopoietic environment of the bone marrow. We used the rodent model Plasmodium berghei to study gametocyte behavior through time under physiological conditions. Intravital microscopy demonstrated preferential homing of early gametocyte forms across the intact vascular barrier of the bone marrow and the spleen early during infection and subsequent development in the extravascular environment. During the acute phase of infection, we observed vascular leakage resulting in further parasite accumulation in this environment. Mature gametocytes showed high deformability and were found entering and exiting the intact vascular barrier. We suggest that extravascular gametocyte localization and mobility are essential for gametocytogenesis and transmission of Plasmodium to the mosquito. Transmission to mosquitoes is an essential part of the Plasmodium parasite’s life cycle and a target of current intervention...

The Novatec Jetfly SL wheels are light, relatively cheap, and responsive. They’re great for training and day-to-day use, although you do notice a bit of flex when really pushing hard. The Jetfly is Novatec’s mid-range training wheelset, with a 32mm deep rim, a 21mm wide outer and 17mm inner. They’re narrower than a lot of modern wheels, so you may not be able to run super-wide tyres. I used them with both 25s and 28s without any issues. The rims are also tubeless ready, although I used them with clinchers throughout the review. At the front Novatec has used 20 spokes laced in a radial pattern, and 24 at the back in an 8/16 split, with a three-cross pattern on the drive side. These provide a decent amount of strength and responsiveness; they don’t swallow up bumps and potholes, but even when I hit something big I was never worried that I might damage them. Novatec has also included an innovative 3-in-1 hub that can be used across Campagnolo, Shimano, and SRAM. I used Shimano throughout the review and found that it worked well, with instant engagement and reaction to pressure on the pedals. The hubs themselves spin up well and hold their speed well for a 3...
