Never mind the general election, the talk in the Costa Cálida and the rest of Spain

Never mind the general election, the talk in the Costa Cálida and the rest of Spain this week has been mainly about the weather, with successive cold fronts bringing heavy snow, waves of up to 10 metres and temperatures of well below zero to the north of the country, and strong winds and the first dusting of snow to the mountains of Murcia on Friday morning. Much of the week has been windy and chilly but on Wednesday, just for one day, temperatures shot up to a high of 27 degrees in Mazarrón, the warmest in Spain. However, this was just a brief respite before the effects of Storm Cecilia began to be felt all over the country, and in Murcia at one point on Thursday afternoon the temperature dropped by 7 degrees in an hour. Strong winds had been forecast but the damage was minimal, limited to a large fallen tree branch in the city of Murcia, but elsewhere the weather map showed clearly that much of Spain was in the grip of an icy body of air as red alerts were issued for snowfalls of 40 centimetres in the mountains of the Picos de Europa and waves of 10 metres on the coast of Galicia. Just 24 hours after the mini-heatwave of Wednesday temperatures were falling well below 10, and o...

Stakeholders deserve to know how Pepsi will meet new packaging goals logo-pn-color logo-pn-color

With companies lining up in recent months making commitments to groups like As You Sow and Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastic Economy project on plastic packaging, it is important to understand if companies will actually follow through on ambitious commitments. We were pleased to see PepsiCo Inc. commit last week to reduce the use of virgin plastic content in its beverage packaging by 2025 through increased use of recycled content and alternative delivery systems, but announcements like this deserve closer scrutiny. Long before plastic pollution became an environmental crisis in the public consciousness, As You Sow was engaging Pepsi to use more recycled plastic content and use its influence to increase container recycling rates to provide more materials for recycled content. Over two decades of engagement with Pepsi, there’s good news and there’s bad news about its record on delivering on commitments. First, the good news: In 2003, both Coca-Cola Co. and Pepsi committed to As You Sow to use at least 10 percent recycled PET in plastic beverage bottles in the U.S. market by 2005. Pepsi met that goal and has done so continuously to the present. Coke briefly...

5 Best Waterproof Mattress Protectors For Bedwetting

Whether your little one is leaking through diapers, or struggling to make it through the night without an accident, the best waterproof mattress protectors for bedwetting can help keep your mattress damage-free and fresh. But before you start shopping, you’ll need to spend some time thinking about your specific mattress-protecting needs. If you’re caring for a baby, you’ll need a fitted crib sheet to protect against everything from diaper blow-outs to spit-up to spilled formula. And for toddlers who are transitioning out of diapers, making it through the night is always a gamble. Even if your toddler is showing real progress with their potty training, statistics show that about 40 percent of 3-year-olds wet the bed, according to WebMD. So having the added protection of a mattress pad — whether it’s for their own toddler bed or one for travel — can give you some peace of mind. It’s also true that kids can still struggle with bedwetting into their tweens. While WebMD noted that the majority of kids stop wetting the bed around age 5 or 6, 15 percent of children are still dealing with this issue after their fifth birthday. And according to Verywell Fami...

Holidays come wrapped in brown at Laguna Beach Youth Shelter, courtesy of UPS volunteers

Orange County isn’t known for white Christmases, but this year the holiday season came to Waymakers’ Laguna Beach Youth Shelter in UPS brown — even with same-day delivery courtesy of the local UPS location. Volunteers from the shipping company’s Laguna Beach office decked the shelter with boughs of holly Thursday afternoon as part of the second Holiday House Decorating Contest in partnership with Waymakers, a Santa Ana-based nonprofit that provides counseling and support services to children and families throughout the county. Lights were hung with care and candy canes were staked in front of the house. From his perch on the deck, the Grinch watched to make sure no one except him and his dog, Max, would be coming to steal Christmas this holiday season while volunteers dressed in brown assembled a Santa Claus and snowman to join him. The decoration of the Laguna Beach shelter coincided with a similar effort by UPS’ Anaheim hub, which decorated the Tustin Youth Shelter. Carol Carlson, program director for the Laguna Beach Youth Shelter, said the decorating is a friendly competition conducted through social media. Voting is scheduled to continue through Dec. 1 on Waymakers’ Faceboo...

It’s time once again for the annual Cooling Showcase. The NEWS’ annual issue has traditionally introduced

It’s time once again for the annual Cooling Showcase. The NEWS’ annual issue has traditionally introduced the latest cooling units available for the upcoming summer season. The intent is to help contractors prepare for this busy period by doing the research that will help them to distinguish between brands. Like last year, this year’s Cooling Showcase is split into two parts — commercial and residential. This issue focuses on the commercial side of the air conditioning industry, while the April 15 issue highlighted new offerings in the residential cooling market. Included in the coverage is feature-specific information about each individual product as submitted by the manufacturers. The product chart includes technical facts, such as unit tonnage, refrigerant type, efficiency rating, and cooling capacity. The photo feature below provides more in-depth information on the features of each individual unit and also includes technical support information from the manufacturer. The manufacturers provided all of the data included in the product grid, as well as in the photo feature. Therefore, any questions should be directed to them via the contact information provided in the photo fe...

Every product is independently selected by (obsessive) editors. Things you buy through our links may earn New York a commission. As with so many ’90s things, roller-blading is back. Even Chris Evans does it. Even if the last time you strapped on a pair of roller blades (also known as “inline skates”) was your eighth-grade best friend’s roller-rink birthday party — there are plenty of modern options out there for all experience levels and road conditions. There’s a lot more to picking out a pair of roller blades than requesting your size at the roller-rink rental counter, though. If you’re going to invest in a pair of roller blades, you’ll want to consider the number and size of the wheels, the length of the frame (the part that the wheels are attached to), and the stiffness or cushiness of the boot, which all affect control and maneuverability. We talked to eight roller-blading instructors, retailers, and skating enthusiasts about the best blades for recreational skating, city skating, aggressive skating, and more. Several of our experts recommended roller blades from K2, a 25-year-old inline-skate manufacturer that also makes helmets and pads (don’t forget to get these too!) Pa...
