An adventure or dual-sport motorcycle is defined as a street-legal motorcycle that presents qualities that make it both a comfortable long-distance highway cruiser and an capable off-roader.

Jacks of all trades of the motorcycle realm, ADV models usually present a higher profile than usual, mounted on long-travel suspension, a convenient windscreen attached to the head of the bike without a bulky fairing, knobby tires, and in some cases, side pans for storage. The riding position is usually upright to provide comfort and motion to the rider. The tank size is usually superior to other models to provide the traveler with a longer range.

We’re already familiar with the new F 850 GS introduced earlier in 2018. For 2019, BMW throws in the Adventure version. The name is self-explanatory: this is an adventure-friendly version of the 850. What this means is that it adds more comfort, but also more capability to the smaller dual-sport model.The Adventure trim level receives a bigger gas tank and an adjustable windscreen, an engine crash bar, as well as adjustable gear and brake levers.It also comes equipped with two standard ride modes (and three optional), ABS, automatic stability control as well as Dynamic traction control and adjustable electronic suspension.

The staple of adventure bikes, the BMW R 1200 GS, is getting a considerable upgrade for 2019 with the introduction of a new generation, a new engine, and a new name: in comes the 1250. Few models evoke adventure riding quite like the R 1200 GS so the new 1250 has big shoes to fill. For 2019, the GS receives an 84-cc and 9-hp boost, now sporting a shiny new 1,254cc flat twin engine producing 136 hp and 105 lb-ft of torque and teamed with new variable timing ShiftCam technology. The 1250 also receives a flight of new technologies that include two riding modes, standard Automatic Stability Control, and Hill Start Assist. The optional Riding Modes Pro package adds the Dynamic Pro, Enduro, and Enduro Pro modes as well. It comes with a 6.5-inch full-color TFT screen, displaying vital information and enabling full control of the R 1250's various features via the BMW Motorrad Multi-Controller. An optional Intelligent Emergency Call system can automatically call for help in the event of a crash.

Ducati gave its Multistrada all the tools to go even further down the trails with the all-new Enduro. The brand updated the “regular” Multistrada last year with a new 1,262cc Testastretta mill with Ducati Variable Timing (DVT) technology so obviously, we expected the 1200 Enduro to follow. It did in October after Ducati teased a mudded-up badge.

The Enduro now produces 158 horsepower, like the standard Multistrada. While it may seem like a lot (too much?) power to venture off-road, the Testastretta is well balanced and runs very smoothly, something most reviewers have agreed on. Other features include Bosch Cornering ABS, Cornering Lights, Wheelie Control, Traction Control and Vehicle Hold Control, in addition to a Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) which allows for clutchless shifts in both directions.

The Enduro also adds a higher ground clearance and a slightly longer wheelbase to the mix for improved off-road capability. It features a 48-mm fully adjustable fork and rear shock with 185mm travel capacity (versus 170 on the regular Multistrada) and equipped with electronic compression and rebound damping adjustment and Evo Ducati Skyhook Suspension.  

The CB500X isn’t a typical adventure bike like its big brother the Africa Twin is. Fresh out of the dealer, the X might serve you better on the road than off of it. However, since the model has been introduced 7 years ago, people have been turning to the aftermarket to make their CB more trail friendly.

This didn’t go unnoticed and Honda decided to address this with a few updates for the 2019 model-year. This included a slightly upgraded 471cc mill with new valve timing, fuel injection nozzles and air intake meant to provide a 3 to 4 percent torque increase at mid-range. Suspension travel has been increased at the front and at the back as well as ground clearance to improve the model’s off-road capability. The model also features a new assist slipper clutch with lighter lever pull, a bigger front wheel, revised steering radius, as well as a repositioned handlebar for what should become a more trail-friendly behavior.

The entry-level version of the Versys does receive a few updates for 2019 including a discrete makeover. The biggest news for 2019 is the addition of a flight of rider-assist technologies that Kawi concentrated into a brand new trim level: the SE LT+. On the surface, both Versys are technically the same. The LT+, however, ups that ante tech-wise by incorporating a number of fancy electronics. The list includes a quick shifter, an ECU-managed throttle for sharper control, Kawasaki’s Electronically Controlled Suspension that self-adjusts to the road conditions, with four selectable riding modes and up to 10 different preload adjustments that differentiates between a single rider, a rider with a passenger, a rider with luggage, a rider and a passenger with luggage, etc. 

When it comes to mastering the trails, KTM has it figured out. Motocross and enduro is what the brand does best so when it announced that it would diversify its portfolio of travel slash adventure models with an mid-size model, we knew we were in for a treat. Following the introduction of the Adventure R prototype in 2017 that left people wanting more, KTM made us wait for quite a while until it launched the production version at the end of 2018. Coming this year to the adventure game is the all-new 790 Adventure and 790 Adventure R.

Both models receive the Duke’s 799cc parallel twin mill, tuned to meet the model’s off-roading ambitions by providing increased low-end power and improved fuel economy. In fact, KTM claims that riders will easily get 280 miles out of the 20-liter tank.

Thanks to its customers' input, but also to the contribution of seasoned enduro riders and of the Red Bull KTM Rally Factory Racing Team, the company was able to develop what it describes as a well-balanced and efficient bike with a sturdy chassis and low center of gravity. A flight of rider assist technologies has also been thrown into the mix since we’re not all “seasoned enduro riders”. All the settings can be adjusted via the color TFT cluster display.

This is a model that’s been long awaited. Ever since Moto Guzzi showed the concept at the 2017 EICMA last year, there’s been a generalize thirst for the return of an Italian adventure/dual-sport model to the market to fill in the gap left by the Stelvio. Through 2018, CGI designs and patents have fed our curiosity until the production version of the V85 made an official appearance in October. Yay Moto Guzzi: the production version of the concept looks just as good!

The V85 TT receives an all-new 850cc V-twin mill rated at 80 horsepower, an exclusivity of the model. All of this extra power comes courtesy of a lighter crank, bigger fuel intakes, bigger valves, and pistons with shorter skirts, all of which make for a peppier engine with, probably, a respectable redline. The engine is used as an integral and active component of the structure adding to its rigidity. The suspension—monoshock-sprung, asymmetric swingarm at the rear with a shaft drive and upside down forks at the front—are all adjustable and have plenty of travel for any off-road shenanigans you want to get up to.

Neo-retro motorcycles combine all the modern technology of 21st-century motorcycles with a style that is usually inspired by the 50s, 60s, and 70s aesthetic, reminiscent of what are today considered to be vintage models. They are easily recognizable by their minimalist, naked silhouette, the absence of a fairing, the use of single round headlight, the high-set handlebar, and a flat saddle.

They can adopt a more standard, basic look, or the popular café racer or scrambler aesthetics. The café racer has a sportier silhouette with the addition of front and rear cowl and “clip ons” while the scrambler is a type of retro off-roader fitted with knobby tires mounted on wire spoke wheels, a braced handlebar, and a high-set exhaust tip.

Also new to the Scrambler lineup are three new sweet-looking versions of the model to fit different types of personalities.

The Desert Sled takes what the Scrambler already does fairly well—scramble—and takes it a step further. This package enhances the bike’s off-roading capability thanks to a set of knobby Pirelli Scorpion Rally tires, combined with Kayaba adjustable suspension and an Off Road riding mode that disengages the ABS. The Desert Sled comes in a white and red livery with matching red frame and yellow coil spring suspension at the back.

The Café Racer is pretty self explanatory—it saves you a trip to the body shop should you have the ambition of turning a Ducati Scrambler into a café-style model. The styling is inspired by Ducati’s 125GP Desmo from the late 50s. The model is offered in a bright silver-and-blue color scheme, complete with vintage Ducati Scrambler badging. It also gets clip ons mounted with bar end mirrors as well as spoke wheels and a blue saddle.

Last but not least is the Full Throttle, the proof that flat track racing is a trend on the rise. The bike is inspired by the dirt track, more specifically by Frankie Garcia’s Super Hooligan flat-track Scrambler he road this season. Clad in yellow and black, the Full Throttle also gets a side number holder, a new set of wheels as well as a new perforated saddle with contrasting stitching.

For 2019, Ducati has given its Scrambler Icon a makeover, upgrading its design to provide the rider with more comfort, thanks to improved ergonomics, and safety. The new model-year receives a modified gas tank and sidecovers, machined wheels, as well as silver/grey accents. The blacked-out 803cc L-twin Desmo is offset by brushed cylinder head fins.

On the tech side of things, the Scrambler Icon is fitted with self-canceling blinkers, Bosch Cornering ABS system, improved suspension, hydraulic clutch with adjustable lever, and much more.

For 2019, Honda has updated the look of its two tiny bikes, the hilarious Monkey and globally popular Super Cub. Originally hitting the market in 1958, sales of the model reached 100 million units in 2017, making the Super Cub the highest-selling motorcycle in the world. 40 years after having been removed from the US lineup, the Super Cub is making a comeback to celebrate the model's 60th anniversary.

As for the Monkey, the 60s model inspired by a carnival ride is getting a neo-retro treatment in time for its return to the US market alongside the Cub. Both models are powered by a 125cc, four-stroke engine which positions them right next to the popular Grom.

The two tiny bikes are as basic and accessible as can be—even their price is ultra accessible with the Cub starting at only $3,599 and the Monkey at $3,999.

The W800 is finally coming to America. After being a European exclusivity for so long, Kawasaki is reviving the W and will introduce it to the US market. What we are getting, however, is the Café version of the model with the racer fairing—the fully naked version could be coming later this year.

The new 800 is built on a brand-new structure and each component has been optimized according to the level of strain and pressure it receives thanks to a fancy analysis software. At its core, the model keeps the same air-cooled, 773cc, parallel twin engine found in the previous generation. Kawasaki sticks to a very retro regime with the W’s setting, fitting the bike with tube tires, a basic 5-gear transmission, and a twin shock spring suspension at the back, among other things.

A lovely feature of this design is the bevel shaft that drives the overhead camshaft—the only current production model to feature one. This layout is inspired by early-century motorcycles. While the engine looks like it’s been fitted with carburetors, it uses instead a more modern, direct injection system. The assist slipper clutch is yet another “modern” feature of the W: there’s little to no fluff on this model. No ABS, no ride modes. Even the speedometer and tachometer are analog—only the odometer is digital. A series of accessories can be added to make the W800 more versatile, including heated grips,  passenger grab bar, luggage rack, and hook nut set.

British maker Norton created some waves when it introduced its all-new Atlas, offered in the Nomad and the Ranger variation. The company’s plan with the Atlas is also quite ambitious—from producing premium and low-volume models, Norton is now dabbling into mass production thanks among other things to the model’s attractive pricing that starts at $12,000 for the entry level Atlas Nomad.

The Atlas also adds a new mid-range engine to the company’s portfolio, a downsized variation of the 1,200cc V4 it has been working on for its V4 RR, with a different cylinder layout. Both the Nomad and the Ranger get a 650cc, parallel twin with double overhead cam rated at 85 horsepower and 47 lb-ft of torque.

Both models are built on a steel twin tube chassis complete with an aluminum swingarm, fitted with aluminum spoke wheels, displaying a dry weight of 392 lb. The Nomad is the tamer version showcasing a more classic scrambler aesthetic. It features a 15-liter composite tank, 18-inch wheel at the front and 17-inch wheel at the back, Brembo brake kits, and Roadholder adjustable fork and monoshock suspension.

The Ranger is introduced as the slightly wilder twin. It is mounted on a 19-inch wheel at the front and a 17-inch at the back and comes with skid plate, mudguard, aluminum rear panel, cowl with windscreen, and braced handlebar. It receives a slightly longer-travel adjustable Roadholder suspension as well.

Royal Enfield’s Twins took their sweet time to make their way to the market, but finally, the pair was announced for 2019 with an excellent price to match, slipping just below the $6k belt. The Continental GT and INT 650 are Royal Enfield’s brand new twins, powered, as their nickname suggests, by an equally new 648cc parallel twin mill rated at 47 horsepower.

Stopping power comes from single front and rear disks with standard ABS. Featuring more classic styling reminiscent of bikes of the '60s, the INT 650 features a teardrop tank, raised handlebars, and mid-controls. Twin number two, the Continental GT 650, sports a look that's more cafe racer with clip-ons, a sculpted tank, and rearsets.

The SV650 has built a reputation for being a pretty straightforward, easy-to-get-on bike with just enough gut to be fun and to provide first-time riders with a good starter. While the bike is usually recognized for its sport naked silhouette—though it did get a full sport fairing at some point in its history—it seemed a good place to start for Suzuki’s first and shy incursion in the world of retro design.

Granted, the brand does have a few vintage-inspired models on the fleet, but they are small displacement bikes (think Van Vann 200 and TU250X). Suzuki is the only company that hasn’t succumbed to the call of history and hasn’t introduced a proper vintage-looking model. What the company did instead is take the SV650’s blank canvas and give it a special spin. FOr 2019, the US market is getting the SV650X which is a standard SV fitted with a rounded cowl, a tuck-and-roll saddle, and clip-ons. The model’s specs don’t change—aside from the new-to-the-lineup adjustable front fork.

This is undeniably one of the most highly anticipated models of the year. Triumph played big on the marketing end of things and promised us more capability than ever. Finally, in October, Triumph dropped not one, but two new Scrambler 1200: the XC and the XE.

At the heart of the new Scrambler 1200 line is the Bonneville 1200’s mill with a special "scrambler tune" that provides increased output and a truckload of stump-pulling torque for increased off-road performance. Both models receive high-tech TFT instruments, LED lights, cruise control, keyless ignition, USB power sockets, full Bluetooth integration, multiple riding modes, and all the bells and whistles we've come to expect in new bikes. They even have the world's first integrated GoPro control system for getting the most out of your cameras while on the road and the trail.

Both models are equipped with a new aluminum long-travel swingarm (longer on the XE) sprung with an all-new, fully-adjustable, twin-spring Öhlins rear shocks with external reservoirs. While the XC offers all the entry-level features, the XE take things up a notch. Optimized for off-road hooning, it comes standard with heated grips, optimized cornering ABS, optimized cornering traction control, an advanced Inertial Measurement Unit that drives all the fancy rider aids, and more.

Digging the name out from the history books, Triumph has introduced yet another model to its lineup for 2019. When it announced the Speed Twin, Triumph left us to guess as to where the newcomer was going to stand within the lineup. When it was finally introduced it December, the new Speed Twin found a sweet spot between the Thruxton’s sportiness and the Bonneville’s riding ergonomics.

The Speed looks like a healthy dose of Bonneville T120 and Street Twin styling, propelled by the Triumph’s top-of-the-line mill, the 1,200cc, 8-valve, 270° crankshaft parallel-Twin big bore offered in the Thruxton, Scrambler, and the Bonneville. The mill has been tuned to produce almost as much power as the Thruxton in a much lighter package. Thanks to lighter components including magnesium cam cover, engine covers, as well as a revised clutch assembly that have resulted in a lighter block, the Speed Twin weighs in at 434lb, which makes it lighter than the Bonneville and the Thruxton, with an output rated at 96 hp. The new model has the potential of becoming one of Triumph’s most exciting ride.

Suspension is provided by Kayaba forks and twin Kayaba shocks at the back. At the front, the wheel is fitted with a set of Brembo four-piston caliper and 305mm disk while at the back, Nissin provides all the grip in the form of a two-piston caliper mounted on a 220mm disk. The model receives three riding modes, Sport, Road, and Rain. It receives a set of elegant analog gauges—a step away from the brand’s recent addition of new TFT displays.

It looks like Triumph has found a sweet spot with the new 2019 Speed Twin by combining the more relaxed geometry of the Bonneville with the performance of the Thruxton, wrapped up in a reasonably-priced package.

Despite being busy with two new models and a new performance division, Triumph has taken the time to show its Streets a bit of love by updating their looks and giving them a little performance boost. The most exciting update is undeniably the power increase both models have received. In fact, the output of the parallel twin has been jacked by 10 horsepower to reach 64 hp for 59 lb-ft of torque. The redline has been raised by 500 rpm and set at 7,500.

The block itself gets a new magnesium cam cover, lightweight crankshaft, deadshaft, and balance shafts, as well as a lighter clutch. The Nissin brake calipers have been swapped for 4-piston Brembos. The two Streets also get a high-spec cartridge front fork and a slightly reorganized riding ergonomics meant to improve comfort.

The Twin receives a new set of aluminum spoke wheels while the Scrambler gets a more rugged saddle finish and a wider front fork. Both bikes are decorated with Triumph’s new and modernized logo and receive a new instrument cluster.

Tech-wise, the company has been generous with the Streets. Both get new Road and Rain riding modes, ASB, traction control, torque assist clutch as well as an immobilizer and a USB port. The Twin is also offered with optional tire pressure monitoring.

Triumph decided to launch its new custom division called Triumph Factory Custom (TFC) by introducing a very sexy and very limited edition of the Thruxton. Based on the Thruxton R, the TFC adds a flight of features that help increase the bike’s performance. Capped with a carbon fiber racer fairing, it has been fitted with lighter components including the carbon fiber mudguard and seat cowl as well as an aluminum engine rail and battery, which have allowed to attain a 22-lb weight reduction.

The limited edition model receives a tuned up version of the model’s 1200cc parallel twin mill now rated at 107 hp and 85 lb-ft of torque, a 10-horsepower and 2.4-lb-ft of torque increase. The exhaust system has been specially prepared by Vance & Hines and features a titanium silencer and carbon fiber end caps. The blacked out look is completed by a set of black anodized wheels, a black engine cover, black Öhlins shocks while stopping power is provided by a set of Brembo 4-piston calipers mounted on twin Brembo 310 mm floating discs at the front and Nissin 2-piston calliper teamed with a 220-mm disc at the back. Only 750 units of the Thruxton TFC will be produced.

A motorcycle that qualifies as an electric is entirely propelled by a fully electric powertrain. Unlike a hybrid that combines the performance of an electric motor and a petrol engine, the electric motorcycle relies only on a battery pack and associated electric motor.

This segment englobes a wide variety of silhouettes and types of motorcycles, from scooters and mopeds to fully-faired sport models.

Unveiled at EICMA, the Arc Vector brings the future of riding to 2019. The electric bike is a beast, boasting a 124 mph top speed, 138 electric horsepower, and a range estimated at up to 170 miles in the city. That’s not all that’s impressive about it.

The Vector is built on a monocoque structure rather than a traditional tubular frame, fitted with a carbon fiber wishbone front suspension, as well as a set of Öhlins suspension and Brembo brakes. Any buyer of the Vector will also receive a specific helmet and riding jacket that communicate with the “intelligent” bike. The helmet features HUD, navigation, and a rearview camera, while the jacket communicates tactile information to the rider. For instance, obstacles are identified by a vibration or a gentle tap on the rider’s shoulder.  

Sounds too good to be true? It isn’t—that is, if you have $117,000 to spare and manage to get your hands on one of the 399 units that are scheduled to roll out during the first year of production.

What if you could get your hands on an electric bike for a little more than $2,000, would you board the electric train? If so, keep an eye out for California Scooter Company’s (CSC) City Slicker. The Groom-looking, Chinese-built model is a neat addition to CSC’s lineup, known for its funky, low-priced bikes built overseas by Zongshen using CSC specs and standards.

The City Slicker offers a respectable range of up to 62 miles in the city and can reach a top speed of 48 mph. The tank is a convenient storage compartment and even offers two drive modes to adapt the bike’s personality to the rider’s preference. For only $2,495, the City Slicker is a great addition to any garage, ideal for urban commuting.

Dutch company Etergo recently received a massive $11-million investment from an anonymous German automaker. Combined with the near-$6-millions it gathered via its crowdfunding campaign, it looks like the AppScooter is set for production!

The AppScooter can receive up to three batteries, which should offer an impressive range of up to 150 miles. If you don’t need all that range on a daily basis, two of the batteries can be removed and left at home or in the office to charge—the AppScooter will gladly run on only one, allowing you to swap and get a fresh charge every time you head out.  

It also features a practical 60-liter storage compartment under the seat and will connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth to provide navigation displayed directly on the scooter’s screen.

The model is expected to come to the U.S., however not before another year or so. European pricing is set at €3,399 ($3,860). If that price survives exporting fees, we could end up with a very solid new electric scooter contender on the market.

California startup Fly Free is playing the vintage card to the max, from its Captain America-looking logo to its undeniably retro lineup of all-new electric bikes. In fact, earlier in 2018, the company released two of its projected three models: the Smart Desert and the Smart Café.

The current trends in motorcycle aesthetics and the names of the models are a dead giveaway as to what inspired the Smarts design. The Smart Desert is, of course, the scrambler off-roader with a look similar to the Husqvarnas ridden by Steven McQueen 60 years ago. The Smart Café is the road racer with the classic front and back cowls, clip ons, and flat tuck and roll saddle.

Both models are able to travel up to 50 miles (100 miles with the additional battery) and can reach a top speed of 50 mph. Fly Free’s third Smart, the “Old”, has yet to be unveiled. Pricing is expected to begin around $6,399.

Here’s one that took its sweet time crawling to the market, but after years of development, touring, testing, teasing, and ultimately losing a bit of the crowd’s interest, looks like Harley-Davidson Livewire should finally be ready.

The company has yet to release any relevant information regarding its first electric model such as battery capacity, range, output, price, etc. Harley went as far as to bring the bike to Milan to show the (rest of the) world without adding anything to what we already knew. Harley has been promising the model for four years now, so have they managed to keep up with the electric industry’s fast-paced competition or will it be already outdated by the time it comes out? We’ll find out in 2019.

We do know the model will be equipped with 7 riding modes, ABS, Brembo brakes, traction control, TFT display, and acceleration will be provided by the permanent magnet electric motor.

Chinese company Super Soco was also in Milan for the 2018 EICMA back in November. It was in town to show off its all-new TC Max, the TC’s brother on steroids. With a look that reminds of Honda’s Neo Sport Café concepts and a silhouette that screams “motorcycle” rather than “electric motorcycle”, the TC Max offers everything the entry-level TC offers, but better.

Electric range previously set at 50 miles (100 with two batteries) is now extended to 68 miles and top speed increases from 45 mph to 62 mph. The battery is a 72 Volt block able to produce 3.2 kWh of power, which translates roughly to 4 hp. The best part is that the TC Max price tag has been set at $5,100 which makes it easy to get on.

Super Soco’s electric lineup isn’t available in the US yet, but steps are being taken for the company's product to come to the American market.

Tarform takes the environmental approach to a whole new level. Not only is its bike electric (of course), but the company uses 3-D printed components as well as biomaterials, aiming to reduce wastes. Who doesn’t want to encourage that?

The company plans on putting its new e-bike on the market by the late 2019. We’re hoping by then the model will receive a name. The design is obviously inspired by that café racer aesthetic with the flat tuck and roll saddle and pillion cowl. Other elements, such as the hexagonal handlebar, digital display with what looks like rider assist technology, and arc-reactor-like feature on the side of the battery give it a more modern flare.

The unnamed model is expected to offer a combined 75-mile range—there’s been no talk of a top speed just yet. Pricing for a regular unit is set at $18,000 while the collectors’ edition will set you back $28,000. 

While the electric variant of the famous little Italian scooter has been available on the European market since October 2018, the U.S. is only getting it this year. The range of the Vespa Elettrica is estimated at 60 miles and power is rated at roughly 5 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. A full charge takes 4 hours.

The vintage little thing should be available here in April 2019 and pricing has been set at a steep $7,400.

If you think scooters are meant to be quiet little urban commuters that deliver on cuteness but not on performance, you might want to change that. Here’s the i300 to prove you are wrong about scooters. The electric two-wheeler is produced by UK-based Zapp (maybe that’s what inspired the scooter’s funky z-shaped silhouette?)

The i300 looks adorable, but beware of its bite: the electric little scooter is expected to do the Kessel Run (or in Earthly measurements, the 0 to 45) in 4.1 seconds thanks to a massive 432 lb-ft of torque for a 198 lb vehicle. It can reach a top speed of 60 mph and the removable battery makes charging super easy. The only downside? Range is rated at only 40 miles, which can be easily depleted if you plan on taking full advantage of all that torque.

The scooter goes for $7,100 which isn’t cheap and is currently limited to a few European markets, but we can expect the market to grow as units start rolling out in the spring.

Zero Motorcycles’ dual-sport-inspired models, the DS and DSR, are receiving a little power hike for 2019. The bikes are expected to be 8-percent faster and 35-percent more powerful. The entry-level DS keeps the same battery, however, the more powerful DS ZF 14.4 receives the same battery as the DSR which should increase its range to 200 miles (in the city).

The DSR, on the other, receives instead a few accessories upgrades which will include a windscreen, tank grip, hand guards, and a 12-Volt socket.

The street-friendly Zeros, namely the S and SR are also getting a boost. Like in the DS, the base model S also gets an 8/35-percent increase in speed and power while the bigger SZF14.4 receives a 10-percent range increase to now reach 223 city miles—the best range in the Zero family.

The naked sport or standard motorcycle is a category of motorcycle that caters to a street-specific use. The models included in this class present similar features to a sportbike, without the recognizable fairing. In most cases, they provide the rider with a more comfortable riding position with a slightly higher handlebar while the feet are positioned underneath the rider, creating a forward-leaning position.

While some models can offer considerably exciting performance, standard bikes are usually tuned to have a more commute-friendly behavior.

While Aprilia’s V4s received their fair share of updates, the most surprising announcement rather concerned the Shiver 900. The recently-introduced model—the evolution of the former 750 model—has already taken a trip back to the brainstorm table and receives for 2019 a number of changes. In fact, to improve the model’s newly-upgraded performance, Aprilia has updated its ECU to a new-generation Marelli 7SM unit, meant to make the bike more efficient and smooth-running.

Friction within the cylinders has also been reduced thanks to an anti-friction feature located on the mantle. A semi-dry sump lubrication system helps reduce the loss of power caused by the shaking and also eliminates the need for an oil radiator by keeping the lubricant consumption and temperature in check. Optimized injectors ensure more efficient spraying, resulting in improved fuel economy while an automatic decompresser improves performance at low temperatures.

Despite what looks like a perfectly good sport fairing covering the face of the Tuono, its manufacturer classifies it as a “super naked” so, up in the nakeds it goes! The two versions of the Aprilia Tuono V4 are getting an update for 2019: the tamer 1100 RR and the not-so-tame 1100 Factory.

Both models are powered by the brand’s famed 1077cc, V4 engine capable of producing up to 175 horsepower. While the powertrain remains unchanged for 2019, the model’s two iterations are upgraded with a handful of new electronics, including what is considered to be the most advanced Öhlins suspension system in the world, the EC 2.0.

The technology of the smart EC 2.0 semi-active suspension system allows calibration of the fork and shock absorbers thanks to two operating modes: semi-active and manual, both selectable using the onboard computer. In the semi-active mode, the hydraulic suspension adjusts itself to the type of surface the rider is facing. The manual mode allows the rider to customize the system’s level of response. The bike’s new Objective Based Tuning Interface (OBTi) makes setting up personal preferences easy.

The design of the 2019 Diavel 1260 evolves on the model’s signature silhouette, adding a few minor tweaks to keep the lines modern and up to date. New this year is the Diavel’s saddle profile, exhaust tips pointing backward rather than outward, air intake duct integrated into the gas tank design, trellis frame, as well as an updated chassis.

While those are considerable changes brought to the brand’s super naked model, the biggest change happened inside the engine block. In fact, new this year is the addition of the Ducati Variable Timing (DVT) system, a variable valve timing technology that optimizes the output in a wider range of revolutions.

The S variant of the model also receives Öhlins suspension, quick shift transmission, as well as a performance braking system.

The CB500F is the last model from Honda’s naked lineup to retain the “F” nomination with the rest of the family already updated to the new R platform inspired by the Neo Sports Café aesthetic. This doesn’t mean, however, that the 500 has been left untouched and while we foresee the model eventually changing over to the fully naked neo-retro look of the other members of its family, the last-living F has been updated with a new assist and slipper clutch, a monotube shock at the back as well as a new LCD display. To keep it somewhat relevent in the face of the competition within its own family, Honda has also modernized the lines on the 500. 

The all-new 2019 CB650R is Honda’s third model to receive a design inspired by its new Neo Sports Café aesthetic that incorporates a balanced dose of retro styling into a modern minimalist design. For 2019, the R takes the place of the aging CB650F with a lot of flare. The most noticeable feature of the new design is the round horseshoe headlight, the signature component of the CB’s new age look. An entirely new frame has helped make the new CB650R 13-lb lighter than the outgoing model.

While the engine size remains the same, a 649cc, inline four-cylinder block featuring a striking set of 4 cascading exhaust pipes, it has been tuned to deliver more power at higher revolutions, marking a 5-percent increase at over 10,000rpm. The redline has also been set higher by 1,000rpm and the gear ratio has been slightly increased.

The six-gear transmission is teamed with an assist and slipper and clutch which helps make gear changes smoother and avoids accidental ware of the discs. The ABS version of the model also comes equipped with torque control that the rider can choose to switch off.

The flat track is making its way off the dirt track and onto the tarmac and the new 2019 Svartpilen 701 is one of the models there to start the trend. The Svartpilen, which means "black arrow," brings a dark side personality to contrast the light-side 701. Keeping the same trellis frame design as the other 701s, the Svartpilen gets a unique LED headlight, fork shrouds, handlebar, and tail to add to the flat tracker look.

The Svartpilen gets the same engine as the Vitpilen 701 introduce earlier in 2018, a 693cc, single cylinder mill producing 75 horsepower. The Svart’s engine is teamed up with a six-speed transmission with quick shift technology and a slipper clutch.

Here is yet another flat track inspired model, one that many riders are looking forward to in 2019. Indian got the ball rolling in 2017 when it introduced a road-friendly, customized version of its dirt track-ready Scout FTR 750. The positive feedback has lead the company to introduce a proper production model to its lineup, something entirely different from what the brand had been doing until then. The Indian FTR 1200 is what the company calls a “flat tracker for the street”.

The 1200 incorporates styling cues from the FTR 750 flat tracker, such as the rear swingarm and gas tank profiles. Even the custom-made Dunlop tires have tread resembling dirt track tires but are designed specifically for road use. The round LED headlight enhances the neo retro look of the bike. The FTR 1200 also gets a round analog speedometer with a USB port.

Unlike the Scout that served as the basis to the customized concept, the engine in the 1200 serves as a structural component of the motorcycle, with the frame and swingarm firmly attached to it. The intake manifold is part of the cylinder heads and a dual-bore throttle body replaces the old single-bore. Weight reduction has played an important part in the design decisions that have included one-piece magnesium valve covers. Displacement is up from 1,133cc to 1,203cc. New pistons provide a higher compression ratio. The end result is that power now reaches 120 hp in the FTR 1200.

The black-and-green brand officialized the addition of the all-new Z400 to the 2019 lineup, following in the tracks of the Ninja 400. What’s really exciting about the Z400 is just how good the new Ninja 400 has proven to be so far, with the addition on the Z of a more comfortable, commute-friendly riding geometry.

Cutting down on the fairing advantages the Z that weighs in at 363.5 lb, almost 3 lb lighter than the Ninja. Every design element has been designed with weight reduction in mind, from the wheels’ design inspired by SBK and radial tires to the frame and engine. The bike’s silhouette is compact with a short wheelbase, but the longer swingarm and steep caster angle design are expected to give it a more dynamic behavior on the road.

The new Z shares the same engine as its Ninja counterpart, a 399cc 4-stroke, parallel-twin mill producing 44 horsepower and 28 lb-ft of torque. Kawasaki opted for a very tight gear ratio to ensure the gear changes are as smooth and precise as possible. The assist and slipper clutch reduces the weight in the lever while also stepping in when downshifts are too ambitious, or accidental. It quickly separates the clutch hub and operating plate which relieves pressure on the plates and reduces back torque.

The recently upgraded Yamaha FZ family isn’t ripe for another update just yet. What the naked lineup is getting for 2019, however, is a new name. In fact, to aling its North American models with its European, Yamaha is giving the Fazers a new name tag, which will now make them MTs, for Masters of Torque. The numeral component of the models name will, however, remain unchanged which gives us the MT-07, MT-09 and the MT-10 for 2019. 

An off-road motorcycle also referred to as a motocross, is a type of motorcycle whose main purpose is to provide the rider with a vehicle capable of tackling any type of terrain. The style of motorcycle is recognizable by its streamlined and minimalistic silhouette, a minuscule tank and the complete absence of a fairing. These models are among the lightest motorcycles on the market which allows them to offer unparalleled agility off the road and make them easy to navigate through rugged terrains.

Some of these models are not street legal because of the absence of a proper lighting and blinker system. Other characteristics include long travel suspension, knobby off-road tires, as well as a very narrow profile.

The little 250 is receiving a few updates for 2019. The CRF250R was added last year to the CRF family. To keep up with its competitors, the model has been slightly revised for 2019 with new cam profiles and intake, exhaust ports as well as a short exhaust tip and throttle body.The CRF250RX is a cross between the “entry-level” 250R and the 450RX. The RX stands for superior, competition-oriented performance so this closed-course model receives a 2.2-gallon resin tank, optimized suspension and ECU settings, and an 18-inch rear wheel.

Does the “L” stand for “Lounge”? It could be, because the new variant of the CRF450 is getting a more relaxed, road-friendly version of the popular off-roader that will easily accommodate trips on the tarmac. The CRF450L is the street-legal cousin of the family. While it’s been designed to be slightly less extreme than its other track-oriented alter egos, the L remains a proper dirt bike with a few subtle additions that won’t get you pulled over—namely lights, mirrors, and a civilization-friendly exhaust. The L is a dual-sport in spirit and draws its DNA from the dirt and not the asphalt.

This is the third time Honda’s off-roading flagship, the 450R gets updated since the introduction of its new platform three years ago. The model was introduced on an all-new chassis in 2016 then received some upgrades for the 2018 model-year. For 2019, it receives yet again a few updates, including an improved twin-spar aluminum frame, a new cylinder head design, a new swingarm as well as updated suspension settings.

Its new 125cc, two-stroke engine weighs in at a minuscule 38 pounds and is teamed with an equally new six-speed transmission.

New this year for both XCs is an updated frame that now provides increased rigidity. The engines have also been repositioned within the frame and pivoted by one degree in order to improve front traction. On top of the frame, both the 250 and 300 receive a new body and seat for better comfort and more flexible handling. The new design integrates a an equally new 2.65-gallon tank.

The air intake is also increased thanks to a new airbox and snorkel system and the engine hangers are now made out of aluminum to help reduce perceived vibration from the two-stroke engine. Both the machined exhaust port and the muffler have also been updated for 2019.

The 2019 450 XC-F gets a newly designed cylinder head—which has newly shaped ports, new camshaft, and new, shorter valve timing designed to increase responsiveness—that’s more than half-an-inch lower and a full pound lighter than 2018’s model. Lastly on the 450; the cam chain guides are now made of a lower-friction material.

Yamaha has given its WR450F dirt warrior a few updates for 2019. On the outside, the bike receives a new cowl, kickstand, and skidplate as well as a bigger 2.2-gallon gas tank. These updates have allowed the revised WR450F to lose close to 10 lb, now sitting at 262 lb.The reverse-fed 449cc single-cylinder mill has also been remapped to make the bike more performant at high revolutions and the clutch lever has been redesigned to be more durable thanks to a heat-resistant plate. Also new to 2019 is the onboard WiFi and Power Tuner app compatibility that allows the rider to tune the bike and personalize its handling and performance.

For 2019, the YZ250F is new from the ground up. Updates include a shiny new aluminum structure, as well as new engine mounts and swingarm pivot. Focus has also been put on weight reduction. A sport motorcycle is a type of motorcycle that is oriented towards providing the rider with optimized road and/or track performance. It’s most recognizable feature is its dynamic, fully-faired profile with sharp angles and an aggressive stance. The riding geometry tilts the riders forward, creating an “embracing” posture that integrates rider into the bike’s aerodynamics. This provides agility in the corners and reduces wind resistance.

Not all sportbikes are equipped with high-performance, high-displacement engines—however, they are all tuned to provide optimal performance with steeper output curves and higher redlines. This class of bike also includes the Superbikes, road monsters propelled by one-liter+ engines with high outputs and street-unfriendly top speeds.

Aprilia played the subtlety card with its updates for 2019. Three of its sportier models are getting a few improvements revolving around performance. For the RSV4 RR supersport, most changes happened inside the V4 engine block. In fact, the new model-year gets cylinders fitted with ultra-lightweight pistons and new segments meant to reduce the loss of compression and therefore of performance. Rod heads have also been perfected to reduce friction.

Also new in 2019 is the bike’s smartphone connectivity that now allows the rider to record his trip’s metrics and data and analyze the performance. Voice commands and call management are also some of the features enabled by the Bluetooth connectivity. The RSV4 comes with the APRC electronic suites that includes traction control, wheelie control, launch control, quick shift, speed limiter, and even cruise control. The whole is packaged in a slightly updated livery.

This one built up quite the hype throughout 2018 until its official unveil at EICMA in November 2018. From patented CGI designs to leaked specs, we came to have high expectations of what the new-generation Beemer S had the potential to be. As we found out in Milan, BMW delivered. For 2019, the S 1000 RR is pretty much everything you want a superbike to be: lighter and more powerful.

This third generation of the model is built on a new FlexFrame that improves the bike’s aerodynamics, uses the engine as a structural component, and also helps keep the weight low. The new S is a staggering 24-lb lighter than the previous generation, now weighing in at 434 lb.

New generation also means new engine: the inline four has been revised and now features BMW’s variable valve timing technology called ShiftCam. The one-liter mill now produces 205 horsepower (207 if you’re in Europe). Other features include Dynamic Damping Control, Shift Assistant Pro, a quick-shift system that allows the rider to rapidly change gears without engaging the clutch, DTC Wheelie function, ABS Pro, as well as optional Launch Control feature, Pit Lane Limiter, and cruise control.

For the 2019 model-year, Ducati claims it has gone a step further with the V4 R with even more technology borrowed from its presence in MotoGP. The new V4 is fitted with a more aerodynamic fairing with carbon fiber air curtains. This decision comes from the brand’s desire to rely on physics rather than electronics to increase stability.

The new V4 R engine has been downsized to the 998cc Desmosedici Stradale R V4 that is SBK-compliant and provides more radical performance while helping to reduce the weight thanks to lighter components. Peak power is now rated at 221 horsepower for a 425-lb bike. In case 221 isn’t enough, a new Akrapovič exhaust can boost performance to 234 poneys, making the 2019 Panigale V4 R the most powerful production Ducati ever made.

The company mildly updated its middleweight sportsbike, the CBR500R, with a refreshed design and new, lower clip ons. This slightly alters the riding geometry which puts more weight forward. This, according to Honda, increases control of the front wheel and engages the rider more. The CBR500R also gets a new LCD tool cluster.

The new CBR650R takes the place of the CBR650F (like the new CB650R did for the CB650F) and for the occasion, Honda went sportier and more aggressive with performance to match. Design-wise, the “Total Control” design philosophy has trickled down from the supersport models. In the CBR, it translates into a new cat-eye dual headlight front end design with more sophisticated lines and a new fairing that exposes the main structural beam of the diamond frame.

The handlebar has been lowered and fitted with set of clip ons positioned 1.2 inches lower than on the F. Honda promises that this new silhouette will result in a more dynamic and engaging riding position.

The engine remains the same 649cc, inline four as in the previous generation, but tuned to produce more power. The updated mill now revs 1,000 rpm higher with the redline is now sitting at 12,000rpm—and now produces 94 horsepower, up from 86. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox with an assist and slipper clutch, new for 2019.

Kawasaki’s record-setting H2 green beast is about to get meaner than ever. In fact, the brand announced that for 2019, its supercharged superbike lineup is getting a flight of upgrades, including a power boost. In fact, the H2 new model-year will finally bust through the 200-hp ceiling thanks to a 30-poney increase that will take the bike’s new rated output to 227 hp. With so much power, you need braking power to match, so the H2, H2 Carbon, and H2R brakes have been swapped for a set of Brembo Stylema four-piston calipers mounted on 13-inch rotors.

The rider can now also pair his smartphone with the H2, which displays incoming calls and messages on the TFT screen. Other functionalities allow the owner to access a flight of information about the bike via the Kawasaki app, including maintenance schedule, GPS tracking, odometer, and engine modes.

Kawasaki launched the updated ZX-6R at the 2018 AIMExpo. The 6R is the model within the Ninja lineup that has received the most significant improvements for 2019, boasting a fresh new, more aggressive fairing design fitted on an equally new aluminum frame.The model keeps its now-classic 636cc, inline four engine with the added benefit of now meeting the Euro4 emissions standards without sacrificing performance. The ZX-6R also gets Kawi’s Quick Shift, teamed with an assist and slipper clutch that alleviates the lever.

For 2019, Kawi has worked on two of its ZX models, including its SBK one-liter champion, the ZX-10R. The model gets a power increase to now be on par with it’s European’s counterpart in the 200-hp-high club.

The higher ouput is in part due to the new Superbike-inspired valve train also meant to be more resistant at high rpm. The model receives Kawasaki’s bi-directional Quick Shift transmission that reduces the loss of power between shifts.

Add an R and the Ninja ZX-10RR also receives lightweight titanium connecting rods as well as new performance-oriented front and rear suspension settings.

Suzuki’s famed one-liter Gixxer lineup receives a few updates of its own for 2019, starting with the track-friendly GSXR-1000R. The R gets a set of stainless steel front brake lines hooked to a set of Brembos and teamed with Motion Track ABS. It also receives a new adjsutable performance swingarm pivot.

For 2019, the GSX-R1000X receives the Motion Track ABS system as well and now comes standard with Suzuki’s bi-directional quick shift system, teamed up with launch control and no less than ten different traction modes.

Yamaha’s baby sportbike gets a full redesign for the 2019 model-year. The new R3 gets a 321cc, 180-degree, twin-cylinder engine teamed with a six-speed transmission. The mill receives a set of forged aluminum pistons, borrowed from the R3’s big brothers, the R1 and the R6. Also new on the tiny bike is the inverted front fork that provides more rigidity to the suspension and ultimately, better feedback.The riding geometry has also been optimized thanks to a lower handlebar and seat, and reshaped tank which result in a more hugging, centralized position. Of course the R3 gets a look to match the rest of the R family for some serious sport chops. 

Touring and sport-touring motorcycles are specifically designed to provide riders with all the bells and whistles required to spend long hours traveling on the highway. The large fairing and high windscreen provide protection and increase comfort both for the rider and the passenger. The model also usually comes with a set of sidecases and even a top case to help haul around all the travel necessities. The riding position is usually upright and relaxed, but more engaging and dynamic than a cruiser.

Harley announced that for 2019, it was showing its Custom Vehicle Operation (CVO) lineup a bit of love. The top-of-the-line, amped up models are getting a few updates as well as new color schemes.

The CVO Limited, Street Glide, and Road Glide all receive a shiny new set of Red Band rocker boxes—obviously red, contrasting blackened blocks. All three models also get upgraded with a Boom! Infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity. The Limited and Street Glide are also now available with the optional Kahuna accessory collection that adds shifter pegs, brake pedal cover, muffler end caps, heated grips and rider, and passenger footboards, as well as three new paint options for each.

As for the Road Glide, it receives a fang front spoiler as well as a Screaming Eagle Heavy Breather intake. It is fitted with a 21-inch Knockout wheel at the front and an 18-inch wheel at the back, the only 21-inch wheel available on a Harley tourer according to the company. All models equipped with the Thunderstroke 111 mill are getting rear cylinder deactivation technology. The idea is to keep heat low, so once the engine reaches its optimal operating internal temperature, the system will deactivate the rear cylinder when on idle to avoid producing too much heat. This is meant to address rider-cooking issues when stuck in traffic. The 2019 model-year will also be offered with 3 riding modes: Tour, Standard, or Sport, that adapts the throttle map to the rider’s needs.

Indian has also improved the audio system by separating the tweeter from the mid-range speaker and adding a customizable dynamic equalizer.

Finally, the Roadmaster is singled out for a little fairing update, redesigned to maximize airflow. The vent can be fully opened or closed, for weather protection.

While “Ninja H2” isn’t exactly a name you associate with “touring” because of its monstrous reputation for speed, Kawasaki categorizes the H2 SX SE/+ in its sport-touring family. While it may seem like a daunting bike to be on the road with, the Ninja is surprisingly versatile and comfortable—despite the 200 dormant ponies ready to sprint into action. It can even be fitted with a set of side cases! See? It can tour as well as it sports.

For 2019, Kawi has updated the SX SE and given it a few new tech toys, resulting in the all-new Ninja H2 SX SE+. What the “+” adds is a significant suspension upgrade with a 43 mm inverted Showa cartridge front fork and a BFRC lite rear shock with Kawasaki's Electronic Control Suspension system that allows the rider to customize the “support”.

The model also features new riding modes that adjust the suspension, traction control, and engine output depending on the conditions. The Road setting is for everyday use. The Sport setting stiffens things up and makes the ride more aggressive to attack the twisties. The Rain setting dials it all back a bit so you don't overcook it in the wet. There's also a Manual mode that lets you change all of these settings yourself.

After only 2 years on the market, KTM has decided to give its sport-touring model a little facelift. The updated 1290 Super Duke GT was introduced at Intermot in October with a fresh face and a flight of tech. The most obvious change has been made to the bike’s cowl—now resembling a praying mantis thanks to the mandibula-like double LED headlight, also new to this model year. The adjustable windscreen is brand new as well as the redesigned handguards that now offer less wind resistance.

While the engine remains the same 1,301cc V-twin block, KTM has made a few upgrades, including the addition of new titanium valves and intake resonator chambers. These changes have helped increase the output to 175 hp. While fitted with all the trimmings to make it a comfortable tourer, the Super Duke GT as an undeniable sporty personality.

Tech-wise, the new Super Duke receives navigation, displayed on a 6.5-inch screen as well as Bluetooth connectivity which allows the rider to pair his smartphone with the motorcycle’s interface, accept phone calls, and control the audio. Other features include cruise control, adaptive semi-active suspension, and heated grips.

In 2018, Yamaha introduced its quirky, three-legged model, the Niken. Curiosity ensued and people who got to take it out for a ride were surprised at how close to a regular two-wheel bike it behaved—after all, Yamaha has mastered the art of the leaning suspension for its three-wheeler. For 2019, the brand introduced a new trim level for the Niken: the GT.

The most obvious addition to the bike is a pair of 25-liter locking removable hard bags, enabling you to take a few days worth of cargo on the road with you. The cargo carrier also features an integrated passenger handrail, and a second 12-volt outlet lets a passenger plug in a phone or heated gear.

The model also features a taller windscreen, a new, more comfortable saddle, as well as heated grips. The addition of the two letters comes at a $1,300 premium, a pretty reasonable deal for riders looking to hit the roads on three wheels.
